In contemporary society, our daily lives and surrounding environment change dynamically every day. The Department of Information, Environmental, and Food Sciences conducts interdisciplinary research on new issues related to food and health, the root of human activities; the natural environment and living space, the major places for human activities; and the dynamic states of the human environment and technologies brought on by the development of information. The department comprises the following three courses: Food and Nutrition, Environment and Space Design, and Systems Science and Information Studies. In order to develop specialists in food, living environment, and information, the department offers a curriculum that effectively combines related sciences and practical programs. Through subjects common to all students in the department, students learn general approaches to modern issues related to human society and the natural environment. On the other hand, course subjects address issues specific to food, environment, and information. These subjects are divided into the following areas: Eating Habits and Environment, Food and Health, Life and Environment, Living Space and Environment, Information and Society, and Information Science. The department seeks students who are highly motivated to tackle new issues from a broader perspective.

Food and Nutrition This course develops people who are capable of supporting and leading the improvement of community culture through the implementation of musical activities. Musicians in the lifelong learning society must have the outstanding ability to perform music, a deep understanding of artistic creation, and the willingness to contribute to the musical and cultural activities of the community. In order to nurture these qualities, the Music Course offers the two educational areas of Music Skills and Theory and Community Music Culture. In the Music Skills and Theory area, students acquire performance skills through individual lessons and study music theory. They also learn how to play music in a group through orchestra, choral, and opera lessons. In the Community Music Culture area, students are encouraged to develop the ability to create art and culture in a lifelong learning society, deepen the theoretical understanding of the promotion of music in the community, and put their expertise into practice.

Environment and Space Design Living space, an area of human activities, constitutes an essential part of our lives and therefore, building a safe, secure living environment is an important issue. However, it requires a range of disciplines, including the humanities, as bases to appropriately address the issue. The Environment and Space Design Course reflects this understanding in the curriculum, which enables students to acquire natural scientific and engineering expertise related to the living environment by learning subjects in the two specialized areas of Life and Environment, and Living Space and Environment. Moreover, the Course aims to educate students so that they can address new issues, such as pursuit of harmonious coexistence between the environment of an affluent, comfortable modern lifestyle and the natural environment, by leveraging the knowledge and skills obtained through the overall curriculum.

Systems Science and Information Studies There are a variety of complex challenges around us, such as risk minimization in environmental issues, revitalization of local communities, efficient organizational management and management strategies to enhance corporate value. Since one academic field cannot solve these challenges, a new approach is required, which combines different academic fields in a cross-sectional manner to integrate knowledge. The Systems Science and Information Studies Course aims to develop people who will become social compasses, that is, those who can analyze complex issues and propose solutions by learning methods of interdisciplinary analysis (information science, statistics, mathematical optimization, social research, and numerical simulation methods) while building a foundation on the basic education in mathematical science.
