The Graduate School of Education offers specialized education and research in fields related to the theory and practice of primary, secondary, and specialneeds education on the foundation of a university education. Moreover, we have a program in place where we accept in-service teachers in an effort to provide learning and research opportunities for schoolteachers who are required to have superior qualities and abilities as specialists.

The Graduate School of Education comprises the following two courses and 11 majors: Science of Education Course (school education major) and Specialized Area Studies  Course (Japanese education, social studies education, mathematics education, science education, music education, art education, health and physical education, technical education, home economics education, and English education majors). In the School Education Course, a new discipline of Clinical Psychology was added to the existing Pedagogy, Educational Psychology and Special Needs Education disciplines. The Graduate School features Education Practice Research and Classroom Teaching Research as required subjects in addition to Theme Research.

Science of Education

Discipline of Pedagogy

In this discipline, issues that face school education are dealt with and researched empirically from the viewpoints of educational philosophy, education history, education methodology (including curriculum), moral education, educational administration, sociology of education, and lifelong education. Moreover, advanced practical leadership is developed through a thorough investigation of educational issues that are emerging in local communities.

Discipline of Educational Psychology

This discipline aims to develop higher student expertise in educational guidance, student guidance, and educational counseling in school education. In particular, students, who are in-service teachers, are encouraged to acquire the skills and ability to provide, what school psychology calls “primary and secondary support services.” In the third support service, they are to acquire the skills to provide a team service and to collaborate with students’ parents.

The Discipline also offers a curriculum geared to the acquisition of a certificate for school psychologist to those who wish not only to obtain greater expertise in educational and student guidance, but also to become a school counselor.

  Discipline of Clinical Psychology

The Discipline of Clinical Psychology aims to develop people with specialized knowledge and skills who can appropriately handle psychological problems from the perspective of clinical psychology. This discipline has been designated a Category 1 Designated School: the Japanese Certification Board for Clinical Psychologist grants eligibility to students from a designated school to take the qualification examination to become a clinical psychologist. While providing students opportunities to further their learning and conduct research in clinical psychology, the Discipline of Clinical Psychology develops the qualities to play an active role as clinical psychologists by providing practical training in psycho-educational counseling rooms and outside cooperative organizations that accept our students as trainees.

Discipline of Special Needs Education

The discipline conducts theoretical and practical research corresponding to the demands of specialneeds education centering on the education, psychology, development, and teaching methodology of disabled children. The discipline aims to cultivate educators and leaders equipped with research and practical capabilities equal to their role as promoters of special needs education in Japan.
